Mayor Karen Bass was among three 'record-breakers' recognized Monday at the California Legislative Women's Caucus' California Women Making Herstory floor ceremony at the state Capitol. Sonya Christian, the first female permanent chancellor of the California Community College system, and Secretary of State Shirley Weber, first Black woman elected to the position, joined Bass, Los Angeles' first female mayor, as being recognized as 'record-breakers.' Bass also accepted a Woman of the Year Award. The Woman of the Year Award was founded in 1987 by then-Assemblywomen Bev Hansen, R-Santa Rosa, and Sally Tanner, D-El Monte, who noticed that the Legislature had no events planned in connection with Women's History Month, which is March.
